Thank you for alerting people to the dangers from red dye! Actually, all of the synthetic dyes are problematic, especially for people dealing with asthma. Twenty years ago the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs warned that the dyes in medicines (ironically, called “inactive” ingredients) can cause many health problems, especially respiratory effects.

There are only two red dyes still allowed to be used in food in the US: Red 40 and Red 3. Red 2 was banned many years ago and has been replaced by Red 40.

These dyes are made from crude oil and the majority of them start out in petroleum refineries in China! They are actually very easy to avoid, and the non-profit Feingold Associaion of the United States compiles books listing thousands of brand name foods of all types that are free of the dyes. See http://www.feingold.org.

Asthmatics should also avoid MSG and its many clones, and sulfiting agents. (And everyone should avoid the synthetic sweetener aspartame!) Some asthmatics cannot tolerate “natural salicylates” — naturally-occurring chemicals found in many common fruits and a few other foods. Volunteers at the non-profit Feingold Association of the US have been helping people understand about the many effects of certain foods and food additives since it was formed in 1976.

I don’t understand why more people aren’t up in arms about this. My daughter has a sensitivity to red food dye #40. Is is it a sensitivity or an allergy? When I mentioned it to her allergist, he dismissed it entirelyl. HOwever, anytime she has something in it with red food dye, she breaks out in hives or her tongue gets tingly. She has also had belly aches. If you or someone you know is sensitive to food dye, please go the the FDA website and write a complaint. They have allowed this into our foods and it’s making people sick!

    Joanne,

We are noticing a similar reaction with our 4 year old son. He had a cherry Slurpee and his arms turned bright red (and no, he did not spill it on himself!). Same thing happened when drinking fruit punch and today (Easter) when eating jelly beans. (He actually does have a healthy diet…but I just know mentioning slurpees, fruit punch and jelly beans will bring out the haters!) This has been a recent thing…but it’s worrisome. At the moment, he is just having skin reactions, but it concerns me that it may progress into something else….

i suffer from this and it isnt as bad as it seems. it took me a long time to realize what not to eat and what to eat. I love italian food but i have to get everything with alfredo sauce instead of the normal red sauce. tho, it may seems that almost every food in the world has some sort of red dye in it, there really arent that many. i know there are a lot of parents that are over reacting because there children may also suffer from this. i know my mother did at first. she was a teen mom and didnt know what was going on. so listen up parents, leave it up to your kids. just teach them why they cant have these certain types of foods because of this reason. just tell them that they can have them when they are all better. just listen. this is coming from someon that actually has this allergic reaction.
